2018 Dodge Challenger vs 2018 Ford Mustang

The muscle car is an American tradition that dates back to the 1960s and has been immortalized in art, film, and music. Muscle cars have become synonymous with power and performance on the road. Of course, the Ford Mustang is one of the cars that started it all. But if you're looking for an unbeatable American muscle car in 2018, look no further than the 2018 Dodge Challenger. With tons of horsepower-including some of some of the most powerful engines available on the market-the 2018 Dodge Challenger leaves the competition in the dust.

The 2018 Dodge Challenger starts off at around $26,995, which gets you a 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine capable of cranking out a street-shaking 305 horsepower right out of the gate. While higher-tier Challengers have a considerably higher price, impressive amenities and even more impressive engines more than make up for it, topping out at the SRT Hellcat's jaw-dropping 700+ horsepower 6.2L HEMI SRT V8 or the SRT Demon's 840 horsepower engine built for racing. You can get a new 2018 Ford Mustang at a slightly lower MSRP than the base-tier Challenger, but you'll also be losing out on power, performance, and style. To get the higher-performing Mustang tiers, you'll be paying for one of the most expensive cars in its class. Styling & Options

When it comes to options, both the 2018 Dodge Challenger and the 2018 Ford Mustang have you amply covered. With a massive 16 trim options available, there's a Dodge Challenger to fit any need and any style. From the SXT to the track-destroying SRT Demon and everywhere in-between, if you want the best in muscle car styling and customization, the 2018 Dodge Challenger is tough to beat. The full list includes the SXT, SXT Plus, GT, R/T, T/A, R/T Shaker, R/T Plus, T/A Plus, R/T Plus Shaker, R/T Scat Pack, T/A 392, 392 Hemi Scat Pack Shaker, SRT 392, SRT Hellcat, SRT Hellcat Widebody, and of course, the SRT Demon. Can't choose just one from among all those models and configurations? We recommend that you buy them all!

The 2018 Mustang has a wide variety of trim packages available as well. Engine options range from turbo-charged I4 EcoBoost engines to the more powerful V8s that you have come to expect from American muscle cars. Rather than straightforward trim packages, however, Ford offers a range of sometimes confusing a la carte options that can make a car shopper's head spin.

The Ford Mustang is one of the cars that practically invented the American muscle car category, and over the years its name has become synonymous with power and performance. Unfortunately, if you want to get behind the wheel of a Mustang that gives you the road muscle you crave, you're going to pay a premium. The GT Fastback is the lowest trim level that offers a V8, and it starts at around $35,000, while the high-performance Shelby trims are among the most expensive muscle cars on the road. Fortunately, the 2018 Dodge Challenger has more than enough muscle to make up the difference. With no inline fours to be found, the 2018 Dodge Challenger offers a wide selection of powerful V8 engines, topping out at the SRT Demon with its mind-throttling 840-horsepower engine.

Use of Space

Muscle cars are generally better known for what's under the hood than what's in the cab, but if you're looking for plenty of space matched with plenty of power, the 2018 Dodge Challenger is the car for you. With the exception of the track-ready SRT Demon, which comes with only a driver's seat standard and allows you to add other seats for $1, most Challengers seat five. What's more, they can all sit comfortably! Plus, the 2018 Dodge Challenger boasts the kind of trunk space that you'd normally only see in a luxury sedan. While the 2018 Ford Mustang will seat four in most of its models, the rear seats have been called "so small they border on unusable".

Both the 2018 Ford Mustang and the 2018 Dodge Challenger have stylish interiors made with high quality materials. But if you want anyone besides the driver to get comfortable, that tiny back seat in the Mustang is going to be a problem. That's not so with the Challenger, which will seat five adults comfortably in most models. Plus, the Dodge Challenger features a wide array of technology that helps make for a very comfortable and enjoyable ride, from dual-zone automatic climate control to the Uconnect infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. You can also add in Alpine or Harman Kardon audio systems.

Gas Mileage

Nobody buys a muscle car because they want great gas mileage, but nobody wants to throw money away, either. When it comes to fuel economy, the lower-powered Ford Mustang I4 EcoBoost engines can get up to 21 miles per gallon in the city and 31 on the highway, which is impressive gas mileage for a muscle car. Unfortunately, those inline-4 EcoBoost engines lose a lot of muscle to gain that extra mileage. The more powerful models get around 15 miles per gallon in the city and max out at around 25 on the highway. The 2018 Dodge Challenger doesn't have such a big range, but it splits the difference nicely, with its base engines coming in at a respectable 19 miles per gallon in the city and 30 on the highway.

Safety and Security

Just because you're getting behind the wheel of a car that pours on the power doesn't mean you don't still want to arrive at your destination safe and sound. Fortunately, the 2018 Dodge Challenger got a perfect five-star overall crash test safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration thanks to a variety of active safety features including rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning, and blind spot monitoring, to name a few. Even the most basic Challenger models come with a rearview camera standard.

When it comes to power, performance, comfort, and price, it's our opinion that the 2018 Dodge Challenger has the 2018 Ford Mustang beat. Whether it's the roomier trunk, the comfier back seats, the muscular selection of V8 engines, or simply that unmistakable Dodge styling, the Dodge Challenger is the American muscle car to watch out for in 2018.
