2018 Jeep Wrangler vs 2018 Nissan Frontier

Comparing an SUV to a pickup may feel a bit like comparing apples to oranges, but if you're looking for a sturdy vehicle that can haul what you need to haul, deliver the power that you need, and go off road when you want, you may be faced with such a choice. If you're choosing between the 2018 Jeep Wrangler and the 2018 Nissan Frontier, however, we think that there isn't much of a choice at all. The Nissan Frontier is a good, solid truck, but if your job or your lifestyle has you hitting the trails or hauling tools and gear, the 2018 Jeep Wrangler is the vehicle that will get you there intact and in style.

The 2018 Nissan Frontier is a solid truck, and it has a solid price tag, starting at around $18,990. The 2018 Jeep Wrangler may start off a little steeper, with an MSRP beginning at around $26,995, but when you start factoring in the options and what you get when you get behind the wheel of each vehicle, you'll quickly find that the Jeep Wrangler more than pays for itself. It helps that its 3.6L V6 engine and 6-speed manual transmission can help you start pretty much any endeavor or adventure right off the line with the base model. That says something! Styling & Options

Wherever your adventure is going to take you, the 2018 Jeep Wrangler has a model that'll get you there. It's available in four different trim packages, most of which also have an option for either a two-door model or the four-door Wrangler Unlimited. You can choose from the Jeep Wrangler Sport, which is only available in the two-door model, the Jeep Wrangler Sport S, which offers air conditioning, power windows, and keyless entry standard, the Jeep Wrangler Sahara, with an extra-solid suspension for off-road excitement, and the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, which adds locking rear differentials to a heavy-duty suspension.

Choosing a 2018 Nissan Frontier is a bit trickier. In addition to a number of trim packages, the 2018 Nissan Frontier also offers a choice between King Cab or Crew Cab configurations, as well as engine options. While you can add four-wheel drive to any Nissan Frontier, the pricing may be a little steep.

For years, the Jeep Wrangler has relied on a dependable 285-horsepower V6 engine that is practically synonymous with the brand. The 2018 Jeep Wrangler adds a new option to the mix, however, with a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder that can still crank out 270 horsepower. The new engine also has an electric power assist that helps boost fuel economy. In the 2018 Nissan Frontier, you can choose between a four-cylinder that only cranks 152 horsepower or a V6 that can produce 261. Neither can compete with the two engines available on the Jeep Wrangler when it comes to sheer horsepower, and they certainly aren't even in the same class when it comes to going off-road.

Use of Space

When you're choosing between a 2018 Jeep Wrangler and a 2018 Nissan Frontier, there's one big question: Do you want to haul things on the inside of the vehicle or on the outside? With the Nissan Frontier, you give up any significant interior space in exchange for the truck's 5- or 6-foot bed. If you'd rather have your stuff inside where it's protected from the elements, the 2018 Jeep Wrangler has all the space you need. You can keep all of the seats and still use around 32 cubic feet of cargo space. Need more? Just fold the rear seats down, and that number jumps up to a whopping 72 cubic feet!

Just because you're planning to head off-road doesn't mean you want to skimp on comfort. That's why the 2018 Jeep Wrangler offers a variety of standard features that increase the enjoyment of your ride, from USB ports to an eight-speaker sound system to the Uconnect infotainment system and much more. You can also add special packages to help customize your Jeep Wrangler, such as the "cold weather group," which adds heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and more. The 2018 Nissan Frontier will seat the same number of people as the 2018 Jeep Wrangler (four or five, depending upon what configuration you choose), but the Frontier has a louder and less attractive cabin than the Jeep Wrangler, and the rear seats in the King Cabs are uncomfortable "jump seats."

Gas Mileage

Even with its base V6 engine, the 2018 Jeep Wrangler gets 18 miles per gallon in the city and 23 on the highway. The electric power assist in the turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder helps it do even better. By contrast, even the four-cylinder engine on the 2018 Nissan Frontier only gets an EPA-estimated 17 miles per gallon in the city and 22 on the highway, while the fuel economy on the higher tier V6 engine is practically the same.

Safety and Security

While the 2018 Jeep Wrangler hasn't yet been fully crash tested, the Jeep brand is known for being tough, sturdy, reliable, and safe. The 2018 Jeep Wrangler comes standard with a rearview camera, not to mention a variety of smart design choices that help keep drivers and passengers safe, including high-strength steel beams that help protect against side impacts. You can also add on handy active safety and driver assist features such as cross traffic alert or rear parking sensors. The 2018 Nissan Frontier also has a rearview camera standard, and it scored well in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's crash tests, but it can't always match the sturdy construction of the Jeep Wrangler.

Whether you're going off-road or just down to the office, it's our opinion that the 2018 Jeep Wrangler beats the 2018 Nissan Frontier, hands down. Sure, the Frontier boasts a lower starting MSRP, but you get less for your money, too. A model that could compete with the Wrangler will be pricier, and it still won't offer the same features, amenities, or off-road power. Plus, the Wrangler's more powerful engines still match or beat the Frontier's engines in gas mileage.
